Description

Members belonging to the genus Catenibacterium are strictly anaerobic, sugar fermenters, which produce short chain fatty acids as products of glucose fermentation 2. These include, acetic, lactic, butyric and isobutyric acid. The sole species of the genus utilizes glucose, mannose, galactose, sucrose, fructose, maltose, cellobiose, lactose, and salicin as substrates of fermentation 2. Starch is hydrolysed by the species. In pure culture, cells are rods, which occur in tangled chains 2. No in situ data has been determined for the genus in activated sludge.
