Description

The sole isolate of the genus is an aerobic chemoorganoheterotroph with a strictly respiratory type of metabolism 1. Oxygen is the sole electron acceptor 1. Growth does not occur on single sugars or individual amino acids, but is supported by protein-containing complex substrates such as peptone, casamino acids and yeast extract 1. Weak growth occurs with starch, cellulose and chitin 1. Cells of the Blastocatella isolate are spherical to rod shaped with a tendency to form chains and large aggregates 1. No in situ data has been determined for this species.
