Description

Methanospirillum are hydrogenotrophic, methanogenic Archaea 6. H2 + CO2 and/or formate, are utilised as substrates for methane production and growth 7. In pure culture, growth occurs under strictly anaerobic conditions, where acetate and yeast extract are often required by some species 8 5. Cells in pure culture are curved rods, that can occur singly 8 7 and sometimes form long, spiral filaments a few hundred micrometers in length, that are encased in a continuous proteinaceous sheath 6 8 5 9.
