Beskrivelse

Nitrospira er den mest almindelige og mest udbredte nitritoxiderende bakterie (nitrifikant, NOB) i renseanlæg.

Diversitet

Deles op i to grupper. Gruppe I: "N. moscoviensis-relateret", gruppe II:"N. defluvii-relateret".

Fysiologi

Primært nitritoxiderende autotrofe (CO2-fikserende) bakterier. Nogle kan leve mixotroft og udnytte kulstofkilder som eddikesyre, pyruvat, format, forgrenede aminosyrer og små sukkermolekyler f.eks. glukose.

Udbredelse og anlægs/proces-forhold

Blandt de mest diverse og udbredte nitrifikanter i det naturlige økosystem. I renseanlæg er de sammen med Nitrotoga de mest udbredte NOBer.
